Enslaved Video

Here's a clip (yeah, camera phone) from Enslaved's set at the Key Club in West Hollywood on January 21, 2007.

Also, I have two new reviews up at L4M. The two reviews are Abigail Williams and The Handshake Murders. Destruction/ Into Eternity/ Hirax is coming up at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on February 17th (thanks to Dave Brenner at Earsplit for the tickets), and I'm looking forward to seeing an old favorite (Destruction) whom I've not seen in concert. Luckily, that's a Saturday night because the next night the Unleashed/ Krisiun/ Belphegor tour roars into the Key Club. Am I going to hit both? You bet!

Please feel free, if you're so inclined, to use this entry to respond to my criticism of Abigail Williams and The Handshake Murders.

Dying Fetus Video

Short clip of Dying Fetus at the HOB in West Hollywood on November 27, 2006. Lousy quality due to the fact that I used my camera phone.

Dark Funeral/ Enslaved Show

Last night (January 21, 2007), I attended the Dark Funeral/ Enslaved show at the Key Club in West Hollywood with Abigail Williams as the main support. Unfortunately, this show was a six-band marathon bill with the first three acts being part of the local L.A. scene. Only old school death metal band (with a few pig squeals thrown in) Letum Ascensus were worthy of any note. The other acts, frankly, stunk.

Abigail Williams were certainly tight as Hell, but their brand of melodic death metal, symphonic black metal, and metalcore only garnered a mixed reaction from the crowd. I recently reviewed their debut EP, "Legend", for L4M (to be published soon), and I feel that they have great potential as a band, but they seemed a bit out of place with a fast black metal band as the main headliner.

Enslaved were absolutely fantastic and played a long set, mostly from "Isa" and "Ruun", but they finished with a song each from "Frost" and the "Hordanes Land" split with Emperor from way back.

Finally, Dark Funeral stormed the stage and blasted their way through one gem after another, covering virtually their entire discography. Great stage presence complete with armor, corpsepaint, pentagrams, the works. I had to leave before they were finished, however, as it was already 12:30 AM when I left. I know that the local scene deserves notice, but I could have easily have done away with, at least, the first two acts and saved us all the hassle of waiting for Enslaved and Dark Funeral. Still, a great show and I will have Flickr postings soon.

Cannibal Corpse

I've recently created a Flickr account where I plan to post all of my camera phone concert photos. I have created sets for Celtic Frost/ Sunn O)))/ Goatwhore (October, 2006 at the HOB in West Hollywood) and 1349/Nokturne/Sothis (October, 2006 at Safari Sam's in Hollywood). You can see my sets here. I'll be adding sets for Cannibal Corpse/ Dying Fetus/ Necrophagist/ Unmerciful and the upcoming Dark Funeral/ Enslaved show soon.

More concert photos.

Also from the same show, the larger picture is a shot of local L.A. symphonic black metal band Sothis (when are they going to release a debut full-length? Get with it!), and the smaller shot is a poor picture of 1349. 1349 will be playing at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on April 13th with Nachtmystium, Averse Sefira, and Goatwhore (whom I've now seen three times).

So I'm back. At least for now.

So, I've decided to continue adding to this Blog until I get bored again. At any rate, I'm still writing for Live 4 Metal. The site has had some upheaval with Scott Alisoglu and Pete Woods leaving and Steve Green taking over the editorial helm. I'm hoping that the site re-vamp that's in the works will ultimately increase the exposure of the site as well as allow it to compete with some of the other great metal webzines.

January 21st at the Key Club in West Hollywood is the much anticipated Dark Funeral, Enslaved, and Abigail Williams (with a few local acts) show. Abigail Williams is an interesting band that I've written a review for at L4M and should be posted soon along with 5 or 6 other reviews in the pipeline. My Top Ten List for 2006 will also be appearing soon.

Listened to a new Spanish doom band in the vein of Sleep and Ufommamut today called Orthodox. I'l be writing a review for it soon, as well.

I attended 6 or 7 shows over the past year and I've begun to take some shots with my camera phone (which does a pretty good job). Here's a shot of L.A NSBM band Nokturne at Safari Sam's in Hollywood when they opened for 1349. Great set, lots of inverted crosses, blood, gas masks, corpsepaint, you name it.

Adding Avulsed cover art.

Avulsed "Goresplattered Suicide" album art to accompany the review from awhile back.

Maybe I'll start updating this aborted attempt at a Blog.

Thyrfing "Farsotstider" album art.
